Uthappa played for Mumbai Indians in the opening season of Indian premier league (IPL) and had a fairly successful opening season as he scored 277 runs at an average of 34.62. In 2009, he was swapped with Zaheer Khan and moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He played next two season for RCB but failed to make an impression. For 2011 edition of IPL, Sahara Pune Warriors bagged him, though, the franchise failed to any success in two season but Uthappa amassed 839 runs at an average of 26.21. He was drafted into the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise for 2014 and till present he plays for the same Kolkata based franchise. Overall, in 177 matches, he has scored 4,411 runs at an average of 28.83 with a strike rate of 130.50, including 24 fifties, his highest score is 87 runs.

 Dhawan started his Indian Premier League career with Delhi Daredevils against Rajasthan Royals at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on April 19, 2008, and scored match-winning 52 runs off 41 balls in that match. In the second season of IPL, he was traded to Mumbai Indians in exchange for Ashish Nehra. He played for Mumbai Indians in the second and third seasons of the IPL. In the fourth, Deccan Charges (now Sunrisers Hyderabad) bought him for $300,000. From 2013, he became an integral part of the Hyderabad franchise and was bought again using the Right to match (RTM) card for Rs 6.5 crore. Before IPL auction 2019, however, he was traded to Delhi Capitals. In the 159 matches Dhawan has played in the various editions of IPL, he has scored 4,579 runs at an average of 33.42 and a strike rate of 124.80.Dhawan has scored 37 fifties.
